About the history of Soumak:

Soumak rugs are named after the town of Shemakja, in which they were first woven. They are a flat-woven rug that contain beautiful embroidery in which the embroidery threads are not cut off in the back. Soumak rugs are made with geometric patterns and generally have tribal motifs surrounding the geometric patterns. These tribal motifs are commonly small birds. Soumak rugs are hand-woven and hand-knotted with 100% wool and they are embroidered with 100% pure silk. Because the embroidery threads are not cut off in the back of the rug they hang from 2-4 cm from the back. This means that the pattern is only visible from one side and only that one side is ever facing up. Like most other hand-woven rugs from Turkey and the surrounding area, Soumak rugs are woven with skills that have been passed down the family line, from generation to generation. This means that Soumak rugs are of the absolute highest quality, far superior to anything that is machine-made. It also means that each and every Soumak rug is unique. No two are alike so that means that a room that contains a Soumak rug is also very unique.
